Numerical Approximation of a One-Dimensional Elliptic Optimal Design Problem

چکیده
We address the numerical approximation by finite element methods of an optimal design problem for a two phase material in one space dimension. This problem, in the continuous setting, due to high frequency oscillations, often has not a classical solution and a relaxed formulation is needed to ensure existence. By the contrary, the discrete versions obtained by numerical approximation have a solution. In this article we prove the convergence of the discretizations and obtain convergence rates. We also show a faster convergence when the relaxed version of the continuous problem is taken into account when building the discretization strategy. In particular it is worth emphasazing that, even when the original problem has a classical solution so that relaxation is not necessary, numerical algorithms converge faster when implemented on the relaxed version.

Optimal Design under the One-dimensional Wave Equation
An optimal design problem governed by the wave equation is examined in detail. Specifically, we seek the time-dependent optimal layout of two isotropic materials on a 1-d domain by minimizing a functional depending quadratically on the gradient of the state with coefficients that may depend on space, time and design. As it is typical in this kind of problems, they are ill-posed in the sense tha...
متن کاملOptimal Pareto Parametric Analysis of Two Dimensional Steady-State Heat Conduction Problems by MLPG Method
Numerical solutions obtained by the Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method are presented for two dimensional steady-state heat conduction problems. The MLPG method is a truly meshless approach, and neither the nodal connectivity nor the background mesh is required for solving the initial-boundary-value problem. The penalty method is adopted to efficiently enforce the essential boundary co...
متن کاملA two-phase free boundary problem for a semilinear elliptic equation
In this paper we study a two-phase free boundary problem for a semilinear elliptic equation on a bounded domain $Dsubset mathbb{R}^{n}$ with smooth boundary. We give some results on the growth of solutions and characterize the free boundary points in terms of homogeneous harmonic polynomials using a fundamental result of Caffarelli and Friedman regarding the representation of functions whose ...

In this paper, we model and solve the problem of optimal shaping and placing to put sensors for a 3-D wave equation with constant damping in a bounded open connected subset of 3-dimensional space. The place of sensor is modeled by a subdomain of this region of a given measure. By using an approach based on the embedding process, first, the system is formulated in variational form;...
متن کاملOptimal Shape Design for a Cooling Pin Fin Connection Profil
A shape optimization problem of cooling fins for computer parts and integrated circuits is modeled and solved in this paper. The main purpose is to determine the shape of a two-dimensional pin fin, which leads to the maximum amount of removed heat. To do this, the shape optimization problem is defined as maximizing the norm of the Nusselt number distribution at the boundary of the pin fin's con...
